Different Tree Fertilization Methods

There are several techniques used for tree fertilization depending on the specific needs of the tree. The most common method is surface application This is where the fertilizer is spread over the soil surface around the tree and then watered in. It is a very simple method, but it may not work for trees that need a lot of help. The next method is called soil injection or sub-surface application. This method involves injecting the fertilizer solution straight into the soil near the tree's root zone. Most of the time this method is used when the tree is surrounding by grass or other landscape and we don't want it to absorb the nutrients intended for the tree. The final method is direct foliar spray. This is where the trees trunk and leaves are sprayed directly with the fertilizer. This is intended to give the tree an immediate boost to promote healthy growth right away.

How do I Know if my Trees Need to be Fertilized?

Noticing signs that you tree may need to be fertilized is fairly easy to spot. The difficult decision is whether or not fertilization will work or if it should just be cut down and removed. If your trees are showing signs of leaf discoloration or wilting or an excess of dead and falling branches, it may be lacking nutrients and could benefit from fertilization. It is important to catch the early signs of deteriorating tree health, because if you wait to late, fertilization may not work. It's also a good idea to have your soil tested periodically to assess its nutrient levels. At Waco Tree Service, we have certified arborists that can do a proper assessment to see if your trees could benefit from different fertilization techniques or if it is too far gone and will need to be removed.

When is the Best Time to Fertilize Trees in Texas?

In general, the best time to fertilize your trees in Texas is during the growing season when they are actively producing new growth. For the majority of trees, this is in the early spring, just before new leaves begin to emerge. During this time, it is easier for the soil and tree roots to absorb the nutrients from the fertilizer giving it the best chance to promote healthy growth. For evergreen trees, fertilization can take place in the spring or early fall. It is generally not recommended to fertilize trees in the winter when most trees lose their leaves and become dormant.
